Founded in 1760, historic Tarboro, situated on the banks of the Tar River, has been called one of North Carolina’s prettiest small towns. George Washington described it as “lively and thriving.” It is one of two original town commons in the United States and boasts of Colonial, Antebellum and Victorian architecture with a mix of contemporary.
Ms. Barbara Campbell Davis, our local guide, is a retired Executive Presbyter/Stated clerk for the Presbytery of New Hope (36 counties in Eastern NC). She now does a lot of volunteer work in Edgecomb County. Further, she chose the best of the best that Tarboro has to offer for our group on December 20th. I am excited!!
Itinerary:
7:00 AM: Motorcoach rolls from the back parking lot of Winter Park Baptist Church toward Tarboro.* Rest stop at Warsaw Rest Area.
10:00 AM: Arrive Edgecombe County Adm. Bldg. (201 St. Andrews St., Tarboro)
Rest rooming, then Orientation by Ms. Davis.
Visit Howard Memorial Presbyterian where they display a Chrismon Tree that represents the meaning of Christmas. Also, hear a brief story about a hymn (that we all sing in protestant churches) that was written there. Let’s ask to sing it on December 20.
Visit Calvary Episcopal Church and its Historic Churchyard and then see Historic Homes on the way to the lovely and historic Myrtle Grove.
12:00 PM: A festive Christmas Brunch and Historic Tour. Christmas is “their season” and it is extravagant at Myrtle Grove.
1:45 PM: Leave Myrtle Grove for the short drive to downtown Tarboro.
2:00 PM: Visit Blount-Bridgers a historic home and Art Museum
Tour the Tarboro Commons
Take a brief shopping trip

4:45 PM: Dine at An Antebellum Dinner at Addie’s, featuring the Yule Log and farm specialties.

6:00 PM: Back to the coach and on to the Rudy Theater, Selma, NC for their 7:40 PM Christmas Show.

10:00 PM (approximate): Begin journey back to Wilmington arriving about 11:15 or 11:30 PM.
Yes, it is a long day but you have “rest breaks” on the motor coach as you transfer from site to site. There is so much to see and enjoy in the original “Tawboro,” I tried to pack in as much as I could for you to enjoy in a day. Since we are passing Selma, I couldn’t resist adding the Christmas Show there.

COST: $150 pp. includes everything on the tour. You will need a little money for personal items and suggested gratuities for the driver ($3.00) and local guide ($2.00). We need at least 30 people registered for this tour ASAP—and certainly by November 17.

*Winter park Baptist fronts at 4700 Wrightsville Avenue. You will park behind the church between Park Avenue and Pine Grove Drive. The parking lot has no street number, but you will see the Winter Park Baptist vans and buses back there.
