Vicarious Evening in Scotland

for the 15th annual

Robert Burns Supper and Scottish Celebration

At the Country Squire Restaurant in Kenansville, NC

January 23, 2016

2:45 P.M.  Board the motorcoach at Winter Park Baptist Church*

3:00 P.M.  Wheels turn

4:00 P.M.  Begin a guided tour of St. Helena—one of NCs smallest incorporated villages.   Never been there?  You will be glad to hear  how a group of Russians found their way to Pender County and cheerfully settled fewer than six acres of land.  Three descendents now remain to tell their fascinating story and to keep their Russian Orthodox Church alive.

6:15 P.M.  Arrive at the Country Squire for a fun filled evening. Allow your mind take you on this vicarious trip to Great Britain where young Bobby Burns grew up, played and probably rode in a jolting cart now and then. Imagine--he never suspected that he would become a “favorite son” of his homeland!

7:00 P.M.  Dinner begins.

This is an evening of fiddling (Celtic style), bagpipes, singing, dance,  poetry readings and more. Robert Burns was a Scottish poet who wrote for the common man and was not widely acclaimed until his death. Burns supper celebrations are held worldwide in January to honor Burns. The lowly dish of “Haggis” was immortalized by Burns and is always served on this occasion. It is presented with great ceremony and will be lead in by Pipe Major Andrew Simpson. This is a fun occasion where you can experience a “wee bit of Scottish culture” (or the lack thereof), an excuse to wear your kilt, your tartans or your Tam o’shanters, if you have such hiding in the closet. Or, you may come and just have fun and fellowship with a group of people who enjoy getting together whether they have a good reason or not.

The BACK of the church is on Park Avenue where there is no street number. The parking lot that we will use is a pie-shaped property between Park Avenue and Pine Grove Drive. You will see vehicles marked Winter Park Baptist Church parked on the lot and most likely the charter motor coach will be in place when you arrive.
